Backing, filling and finishing your memory quilt

Depending on the material you use on the front of your quilt, it can be finished in one of two ways:

  1. Traditional patchwork quilts – created from cotton fabrics. The patchwork is layered with soft, snuggly, premium cotton wadding (filling) and backed with a 100% pure cotton backing – we will discuss colours and patterns when looking at the clothes. I complete your quilt with machine quilting to enhance the patchwork, and hold the layers securely together. The quilt is then finished with a secure machine stitched binding.
  2. Modern patchwork quilts – created from fleece or other fabrics (see pictures).  The patchwork is backed with fleece in your choice of colour and pattern.  Your quilt is then finished with a sewn edge and quilted with machine quilting (sewing between each patch) to enhance the patchwork and hold the back and front securely together.

When I spoke to Rachel about making me a memory quilt I had two thoughts in mind. One: to create a snuggle blanket for all the family to use that would remind us of some lovely family memories. two: to create more space in my airing cupboard which was lied high with old baby blankets, clothing from the kids babyhood, old dressing gowns. etc. Rachel has done this and oh so much more.

Showing her the fabrics and items became a special conversation and quite emotional as I shared with her why this dressing gown of my husband’s meant so much, why that blanket was more than a blanket for my son, how my eldest son and i chose the baby blanket for my youngest son before he was even born. Rachel was a good listener, asked good questions, and took it all in. I knew when she left that she could be trusted to take good care of my memories. That initial consultation was so important.

And then the finished product was even better than my hopes. A beautiful, creative blanket which looked good, felt good and made me feel good!

Perhaps this is where the recommendation should end but there is a twist. Initially my youngest son was upset his baby blanket had been reused and my eldest son who hadn’t touched or even looked his childhood blanket was also ‘miffed’. Oh dear, what had I done? Rachel showed great concern and I know she has written a super blog all about it! This wasn’t her problem and it was up to me to resolve the situation with my sons.

But Rachel did care. Some weeks later she turned up on the doorstep with a cushion especially made for my youngest son from the remains of his baby blanket. A wonderful card hoping that he would enjoy his precious blanket in a new way brought tears of joy and the hugest smile.

Last night my eldest son ( a teenager) was found under the quilt watching TV while upstairs my youngest son ( age 7) was to be found cuddling up to his new cushion. All in all a success i would say!

And all those items which before were clogging up the airing cupboard are now enjoying a new lease of life and creating new memories.

Rachel is a joy to work with and her attention to detail and care for her products and her customers is second to none. Thank you Rachel

What a wonderful quilt for my son ( living in LA) who will always be close to home by reflecting on the memories that you helped me put together for him. With some photographs and lots of poignant moments in his life so beautifully put together – there is always something interesting to look at. I love the design and the fact that you really thought about giving it a young man’s take. I can’t wait to see his reaction when he receives it but I am sure he will be delighted. Thank you so much! Susan.

I approached Rachel to help create a quilt from the old clothes from my two boys. Clothes that had been sat in the attic for years and were more than likely going to stay there!! Rachel utilised every item I gave her, keeping shapes, buttons and features of garments that I had a strong attachment to. The finished article is stunning! I now have the quilt in the boys crash pad and on cooler nights my youngest wraps himself up in it. He finds it fascinating that he used to fit into clothes that small! I love having the quilt out as it reminds me that they were small once! Thank you very much for creating such a unique piece that represents the early years of my two boys. Rachel B

Rachel, thank you so much for sharing how you are using your memory quilt. Also, what it means to you and your boys to have their tiny clothes, and the memories captured in them, back in your everyday lives. Rachel
